One of the more popular home and office cooling solutions is to install a ductless mini split air conditioning system that is cost effective and provides great climate control on a room by room basis for individual comfort control.

This is one of the more economical and least invasive cool air solutions for all kinds of buildings especially for those without any existing form of temperature control.

Mini split AC systems come in a variety of formats, with the most popular kind being the individual room units that provide both cold and warm air.

This is a great way to maintain a comfortable interior climate throughout the year no matter how diverse the outside temperature can be as the seasons fluctuate around the year.

Mini Split AC Installation Concerns

Understandably, you may have some concerns about the type and amount of work involved in installing this type of system in your home or work space. We're here to put your mind at ease!

Unlike central climate systems that require a lot of internal duct work, which usually means extensive construction disruption, mini split systems do not require invasive construction in the installation process. Since there is no ducting necessary, there is no need to tear up floors, ceilings and internal walls, so your home will not be disrupted or made into an awful mess!

Each room needs the internal unit fixing to a suitable external wall that a small hole is drilled through to connect it up to the external extractor/condenser unit that is fixed to the wall outside. The short connecting pipe is usually concealed behind the internal unit so you don't see it, making for a more pleasing interior decoration layout with just the compact, nice looking unit visible high up on the wall.

Mini Split vs. Portable AC

So how does this type of cooling system compare to getting a portable cooling unit in each room?

There are some advantages to opting for a mini-split installation over what at first glance appears to be the cheaper alternative of grabbing one or two portables from the hardware store. Sure a free standing unit looks the simpler of the two, there are actually reasons why this isn't actually the case when you look a little deeper into it.

While a mini split system requires the services of an expert installer and costs more initially, it is a much better, more economical long term cooling option than a portable air conditioner. Being more efficient and robust, it will actually cost less to run over the long term as it uses less power and is therefore kinder to the environment too.

Being fixed and professionally linked to an outside extractor/condenser unit using a concealed connection, with a split AC there is nothing else to do apart from set the thermostat and switch on to feel cool, using the timer if necessary. This is not quite so true of a portable, which needs to be manually hooked up via an ugly, trailing plastic hose to a window fixing kit to expel the hot, moist air out of the room.

It reduces the portability of the device considerably, because to move it from one room to the next involves unhooking it from the window kit in one room and connecting it up to another window kit in another room. Then there is the home security angle to worry about, since window fixing kits do not allow you to close your windows fully or lock them, which could potentially allow easy ingress for a burglar!
